What Can Jesus Teach You About Life and Death? 

I. The Sick Man: vs 1-2

Now a certain man…

 

  1. His Condition: vs 1 Was sick…

  2. His Name: vs 1: Lazarus

  3. His Location: vs 1, 18: Bethany

  4. His Family: vs 1-3: Mary and Martha

  5. His Relationships: vs 3, 11: He whom you love… Our friend Lazarus…

 

II. The Urgent Request: vs 3

So the sisters…

 

  1. Their Messenger: vs 3: The sisters sent word to Him…

  2. Their appeal: vs 3: Lord, behold…

  3. Their Relationship: vs 3: He whom You love is sick…

    1. The sisters knew where Jesus was staying: John 10:40

    2. The sisters knew Jesus loved their brother: vs 3

    3. The sisters knew Jesus could heal Lazarus: vs 21, 32

 

III. The Savior’s Response: vs 4-6

 

  1. Jesus declared his deity: vs 4: The glory of God… The Son of God may be glorified…

  2. Jesus modeled his humanity: vs 5: Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus…

  3. Jesus delayed his arrival: vs 6: He then stayed two days longer…

    1. To demonstrate His sovereign providence: vs 17

    2. To demonstrate His preeminent glory: vs 45

 

IV. The Cautious Disciples: vs 7-16

Then after this He said to his disciples…

 

  1. Their Fear: vs 8: The Jews were just seeking to stone You…

  2. Their Shepherd: vs 9-10: Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day…

  3. Their Confusion: vs 11-15: And after that He said to them…

  4. Their Hope: vs 16: Let us also go, so that we may die with Him…
